The Camden Garden Club plans to host a free public Zoom presentation by Tom Atwell at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, on the new invasive plants list in Maine.
Participants can learn about the do-not sell list and explain why plants some people like were put on it, the reasons for the list, and some plants to use instead, according to a news release from Cayla Maki-Pittman, media liaison with the club’s Communication & Publicity Committee.
Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column for the Maine Sunday Telegram since 2004. He worked for that publication and its sister papers, the Portland Press Herald and Evening Express, full-time since 1974, in capacities as a reporter, copy editor, layout editor, assistant city editor and special sections editor, also writing columns about gardening and beer as a sideline.
He retired from the full-time job in 2011, but continues the gardening column as a freelancer.
He was born in Skowhegan, grew up mostly in Farmington and attended the University of Maine, where he received a degree in journalism. After graduation he was drafted into the Army, where he served two years, mostly as a reporter/editor for military publications.
This program is the last in the club’s 55th Winter Horticulture Series in partnership with the library.
