LEWISTON — The Cape Elizabeth boys’ hockey team spent the first period controlling play, but looked like it was going to have nothing to show for it.

Then Nick Laughlin found Sebastian Moon seconds before the buzzer. And the Capers never looked back.

Moon scored two goals and assisted on another by Philip Coupe, and Cape Elizabeth skated to a 3-1 win Wednesday against Lewiston for its seventh straight victory.

“We were trying to set the tone and get the job done,” Moon said. “We’re all seniors, we have a big group of seniors, we all want to give it one last push.”

Cape Elizabeth (12-2) attacked Lewiston (6-8) all game, finishing with a 27-8 advantage in shots

“We played at our pace; we wanted to see if they could play at ours,” Capers Coach Jacob Rutt said. “We stuck to a game plan, and it’s been nice to be able to roll out three lines.”

The Capers had nine of the game’s first 11 shots but couldn’t break through until the final minute of the first period. With time running out on Cape’s first power play, Laughlin zipped a pass through the slot from the right point, and Moon fired it home from the bottom of the right circle with 18.3 seconds left in the period.

“It’s something we do on the power play,” Moon said. “Our defensemen have great looks, and that’s just one of them. He found me there, nice look by him.”

Lewiston Coach Jamie King acknowledged the goal was a momentum-changer.

“It’s tough to swallow that, especially on the power play,” he said. “If you give up a power-play goal at the end of a period, it’s deflating.”

Cape struck again with 7:57 to go in the second when Coupe collected a pass from Moon and fired a shot from the right point that slipped under Gabe Pomerleau’s pad.

“We talked about it in the locker room, you’ve got to come out even harder than we did in the first period,” Coupe said. “(It was) a big relief to go up 2-0, a little bit of insurance. You can’t be comfortable with any lead.”

The lead went to 3-0 when Moon brought the puck down the right side, leaned into his defender, swooped past the goalie and tapped in a backhand shot with 3:41 to go in the second. Moon ended up in the net, after the puck went in.

“He had a great game,” Rutt said. “That’s the type of goal that he can score. He’s a hard-nosed player, but he can also score the pretty ones.”

Lewiston tried to rally back in the third. The Blue Devils got a power-play goal from Ethan Blue with 8:20 left and went had another man advantage with 2:36 to go but couldn’t get closer.

“We knew they were big and strong, and last year they were big and strong,” said King, whose team got 24 saves from Pomerleau. “We just said we’ve got to get one in the third and build off it for the next game.”

Cape goalie Charlie Garvin made seven saves.

“At this point in the season, everything’s shaping up to be us and Brunswick (for the top seed in B South),” Coupe said. “It feels really good to get a win against a Class A team like this.”
