WRESTLING
DIRIGO 42, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 39: The young Cougars (3-0), with seven freshmen, overcame four forfeits to defeat the rival Falcons in Rumford.
“Forfeiting four weight classes to begin the evening put us in a must-pin situation for every win, and we had to avoid being pinned in at least one match to pull it off,” Dirigo coach Dana Whittemore said.
The Falcons took an 18-0 lead with two forfeit wins and a pin by Vinny Duguay of Dirigo’s Hunter Emmons. Tanner Bradeen began the Cougars’ comeback by pinning Matt McWilliams, then Giovanni Patterson pinned Devlyn Gross to cut Mountain Valley’s lead to 18-12.
Two more forfeits increased the Falcons’ lead to 30-12. Dirigo’s Isaiah Bradeen pinned Owen Gaudette in the 220-pound match, and teammate Andrew “Goose” Wisecup pinned Mountain Valley’s Wesley Baltrus in 33 seconds to cut the deficit to 30-24. A forfeit win by both teams made it 36-30 for the Falcons.
The Cougars evened the score at 36-36 with a pin by 120-pounder Caiden Skidgell against Reghan Nisbet.
Then Eli Lindus earned what Whittemore said was one of Dirigo’s biggest wins when he pinned “an absolutely-hard-to-pin” Miles Smith at the 3:56 mark. That put the Cougars up 42-36.
Dirigo freshman Jayden Patterson went into the final match knowing that the Cougars would win if he avoided being pinned. He battled Mountain Valley’s Jackson Rajaniemi, but Rajaniemi pulled of a 9-5 victory. That earned three points for the Falcons but wasn’t enough to catch the Cougars.
Whittemore said that the Dirigo coaches and wrestlers “talked prior to the meet, knowing exactly how it had to play out to make up the forfeited weight classes to secure a win. The kids followed through with the plan, and we are excited for a big win for this young team.”
