UMF PLAYERS EARN NAC HONORS: The University of Maine at Farmington’s Terion Moss was named Player of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 26.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in two games last week.
Moss’ week was highlighted by a 34-point performance in the Beavers’ 86-63 victory over Roger Williams University. He shot 14 for 21 from the field and nailed four 3-pointers. He also scored 19 points in UMF’s 73-62 loss to Wesleyan University.
Teammate Jack Kane earned Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. He was credited with seven blocks and 18 rebounds on those two games. He also recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds against Roger Williams.
BATES ATHLETE REMEMBERED
Howard S. Vandersea — an outstanding two-sport athlete who served his country in the U.S. Army, died on Dec. 29 at 81.
The 1963 Bates College graduate, who majored in history, coached football for 37 years after he left the Army. His football coaching jobs including an eight-year stint at Springfield and another 16 years at Bowdoin College. He also coached tennis and softball for the Polar Bears.
He was a three-sport athlete at Northbridge High School in Massachusetts, where the 6-foot-4, 200-pound player excelled at football, baseball and basketball.
At Bates, he was a four-year letterman in football and baseball. He began coaching football at Cheverus High School and was a linebacker coach for the semipro football team called the Portland Seahawks. He signed on as free agent for the Chicago Bears, but was shortly released. He put coaching on hold to attend the U.S. Army’s officer’s candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia, and served two-and-half years as infantry airborne officer.
