PARIS — Town officials said Tuesday during the Select Board meeting that it has received few applications to fill two new positions with the fire department.
The two positions were approved by voters during June’s Town Meeting.
Since posting the openings a couple of months ago, the town has received little interest. The job is for an 8-hour shift, 40-hours a week, plus potential for additional hours for fire and emergency calls.
Board Chairman Christopher Summers said Sabattus had a similar problem trying to hire firefighters to work an 8-hour shift. The town solved it, Summers said, by changing it to a 24-hour shift with two or three days off in between.
Summers said Paris may need to do that, too.
Selectman Peter Kilgore asked if the town had advertised the openings in the local newspapers. When Town Manager Dawn Noyes said it had not because of the cost, Kilgore implored officials to spend the money and list the openings in the newspaper.
In other business, Noyes told the board that the Norway Paris Solid Waste facility cannot accept any brush, which includes Christmas trees. The facility has no dedicated place available for brush. Noyes asked that if anyone knew of another location or a goat farm accepting Christmas trees to contact her office.
The board took a moment of silence to honor the recent death of Onni Raasumaa, who Noyes said was instrumental in establishing the town’s veteran memorials in Moore Park.
Each of the selectmen praised the town’s highway department and the fire department for their work during the past two snowstorms. Noyes said the road crew was working Tuesday to repair several of the washouts in town.
The board accepted a criminal forfeiture of $692 in a recent criminal case.
The Town Office will be closed Monday, Jan. 2, for the New Year’s holiday.
