LEWISTON — Scoring game-winning goals is habit senior forward Alyssa Marcoux can live with this season.
She tucked in the winning shot 5:32 into an eight-minute overtime period, hand delivering Lewiston a nail-biting 3-2 victory over St. Dom’s/Winthrop/Monmouth at The Colisee on Friday.
Marcoux, who scored the game-winner against Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland on Wednesday night, had a help from sophomore defenseman Avaya Desjardins.
“We talked about it all game, going to the net for rebounds, and I just saw Avaya at the point,” Marcoux said. “I knew she was going to shoot it, so I got myself to the net and I looked for that rebound, and I just hit it.
“It is exciting because you know it is two big games — two rivalry games. It was extra special because who doesn’t want to win against a rival?”
For Desjardins, familiarity breeds success on the ice.
“We know each other pretty well, so I kind of know where she is going to be and just try to put (the puck) on net, and hoping (Marcoux) would get (the puck),” Desjardins said. “I was surprised (Marcoux scored) and was really excited.”
The Saints dominated at certain points in the game, but that didn’t seem to rattle the Blue Devils.
“It really went in spells, I guess, where we came out, I thought, OK; and I thought (the Saints) dominated a majority of the second period and a good part of the third there — and we turned it around I’d say the last eight minutes of the third,” Lewiston coach Scott Laberge said. “I thought we controlled play and got the tying goal.
“From then on we were in their zone the entire game. (The Saints) had some size, solid D. Their goalie (Abrianna White) was solid. She wasn’t giving us much. She was giving up some rebounds, but I think our goalie (Kim McLaughlin) was struggling with some rebounds, too, because of the traffic in front (of the net).”
Lewiston freshman Crew Langley took a feed from Marcoux and scored the tying goal 8:02 into the third period.
There was plenty of action in the first quarter, where St. Dom’s/Winthrop/Monmouth dominated much of the action. But the Devils struck first with an unassisted goal by junior forward Fiona Landry.
“Overall, I think we played pretty well,” Desjardins said. “I mean we had a little bit of sloppiness at the beginning, but we picked ourselves up and kept going.”
The Saints shook off Lewiston’s first strike and responded with back-back goals. Gabby Allen used Georgie Davidson’s feed and scored at 8:47. Then Davidson followed with her goal, with an assist from Bella Pelletier at 13:18.
“I think we are good,” Marcoux said. “There are some things we can tighten up, but I am proud of us because we all worked hard. We had a lot of minutes out there and we just played until the end.”
