GREENE — A tractor trailer rolled onto its side on Sawyer Road in Greene, bringing emergency crews to the scene Friday night and forcing the closure of the road.
Emergency crews were called out at about 8 p.m. for a report that the rig was on its side across Sawyer Road, near the intersection at Sanborn Road. The cab of the truck came to rest on an embankment, but the trailer itself was badly twisted across the width of Sawyer Road.
It was not immediately clear if the driver had been injured. One witness reported he was out and walking around moments after the wreck.
Greene fire crews were on scene as were deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Police put out a notice around 8:30 p.m. that Sawyer Road will be closed for considerable times while the wreckage is cleared from the area.
It was believed that slick roads contributed to the crash. The area where the truck slid out of control was covered by at least an inch of snow, the result of a snowstorm that slogged on throughout the day Friday. The storm was expected to continue into the weekend.
Other roads in the area were likewise closed due to vehicle wrecks, including Lake Street in Auburn, where a car slid into a pole and brought it down, and Route 197 in Wales for a similar crash.
As snow continued to fall across the region later Friday and into Saturday, more crashes were reported in various areas.
“Our deputies have been responding to several crashes throughout the county,” the Sheriff’s Department wrote in a Facebook post.
