Nick Master broke a third-period tie with his second goal of the game, then completed his hat trick less than five minutes later, lifting the Maine Mariners to a 5-3 ECHL win Sunday over the Norfolk Admirals in Norfolk, Virginia.

Cam Askew scored in the first period, and Nick Jermain’s empty netter with 17 seconds left clinched the victory. Mathew Santos and Mitchell Fossier each had two assists, and Mainers goalie Brandon Bussi made 23 saves.

NHL: Fabian Zetterland scored late in the first period, Nico Hischier and defenseman Ryan Graves scored 33 seconds apart early in the second and Vitek Vanecek made 20 saves as the surging New Jersey Devils routed the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets, 7-1.

Defensemen John Marino and Jonas Siegenthaler, Jesper Bratt and Miles Wood also scored for New Jersey, which bombarded the Blue Jackets with 53 shots and won for the sixth time in seven games after losing twice to start the season. Columbus lost its third in a row.

MLB: The Kansas City Royals hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club had yet to announce the move.

Quatraro replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired as part of a widespread shakeup within the organization after finishing with a 65-97 record for their sixth straight losing season. Quatraro was chosen by Royals General Manager J.J. Picollo, who took over as head of the club’s baseball operations after the firing of longtime front-office executive Dayton Moore.

GOLF

PGA: Seamus Power took the lead for good with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole and held on to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship for his second PGA Tour title.

A bogey on the final hole gave the Irishman a 1-under 70 and a one-shot victory over Thomas Detry, who earlier holed a bunker shot on the 18th for birdie and a 67.

PGA Tour rookie Ben Griffin started the back nine with back-to-back birdies and had a two-shot lead over Power, but then bogeyed four straight holes and followed with a double bogey on 16 as he dropped into a three-way tie for third.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Jordan Smith led from start to finish to win the Portugal Masters for his first European tour victory in more than five years.

Smith shot an 8-under 63 to finish the tournament at 30 under. The Englishman ended three shots ahead of Gavin Green, who was trying to give Malaysia its first European tour win.

SOCCER

MLS: Cristian “Chicho” Arango scored the go-ahead goal for the second straight game and the Los Angeles Football Club advanced to its first MLS Cup final with a 3-0 victory over Austin FC in Los Angeles.

LAFC – which won the Supporters Shield as the top team in the regular season – will host the MLS Cup final on Saturday afternoon against the winner of Sunday night’s Eastern Conference final between NYCFC and Philadelphia Union.

ENGLAND: Arsenal moved back to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 win against visiting Nottingham Forest.

• Marcus Rashford scored his 100th goal for Manchester United, but it required heroics from keeper David de Gea to secure a 1-0 win at home against West Ham.

De Gea produced three outstanding saves in the second half to help United move up to fifth place.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Max Verstappen set the Formula One record for wins in a season, prevailing at the Mexico City Grand Prix to earn his 14th victory and break the record he shared with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton finished second for the second consecutive week. Sergio Perez was third on his home track for the second consecutive year.

TENNIS

SWISS INDOORS: Felix Auger-Aliassime won his third straight title, beating Holger Rune 6-3, 7-5 in Basel, Switzerland.

The ninth-ranked Auger-Aliassime added the Basel title to wins the previous two weeks in Florence, Italy, and Antwerp, Belgium.
