READFIELD — Maranacook Community High and Middle Schools will be closed Monday due to an anonymous text threatening violence at the high school, according to officials.
In an “urgent notice” posted Sunday to the Regional School Unit 38 website, Superintendent Jay Charette said the two schools, which share a campus in Readfield, will be closed “out of an abundance of caution.”
Charette said school officials were informed Saturday evening of an anonymous text that threatened violence at the high school.
Charette said police were notified immediately and school officials will be working with them to assess the validity of the information.
Charette also said he could not share more information because the matter is part of an ongoing investigation.
He asked that any student or others with reliable information about the threat — or students seeking support services — contact the school principals.
Charette said officials plan to share more information, including how the schools will reopen Tuesday, in further communications.
All activities based at the schools are also canceled through Monday, including a planed Haunted Halloween Walk planned by the Parent-Teacher Organization for Sunday evening.
RSU 38’s elementary schools plan to hold classes as scheduled Monday, according to Charette.
