100 Years Ago: 1922

One of the most enjoyable dancing parties given by the younger social set was held Friday evening at the New Odd Fellows Hall, under the direction of John Coburn and Clyde Bridgham. The party was chaperoned and Marble’s Orchestra played.

50 Years Ago: 1972

(from a journal photo) If all goes according to schedule one half of the Lewiston-Auburn Third Bridge will open for traffic Nov. 9. One of the lanes, the first to be opened, is pictured above, heading towards Boxer Island and Lewiston and towards the Auburn riverbank in the lower. Paving of the roadway is currently underway with work continuing after dark in order to meet the schedule.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Raised on his family’s farm in Piscataquis County, folk singer and songwriter Dave Mallett has spent his career weaving the stories of rural America into song. Mallett will perform Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Western Mountains Alliance.

Known as “the voice of New England,” Mallett has recorded nine albums of original material and his songs have been performed by over 150 artists, including Emmy Lou Harris, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul, and Mary, John Denver, Hal Ketchum, Arlo Guthrie and even the Muppets. His new live album, “Parallel Lives,” was released this month and is a mix of 16 new songs and Mallett classics.

Mallett’s Maine performance on Oct. 25 commemorates the Western Mountains Alliance’s 10th anniversary and a decade of working toward sustainable economic and community development in five counties in western Maine.
