RUMFORD — At least 34 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in an outbreak at Rumford Community Home, an 85-bed, skilled nursing and assisted living facility, officials from parent company Central Maine Healthcare confirmed Wednesday.
The majority of the cases are in the assisted living unit, spokesperson Jim Cyr said. There are 28 “active” cases there, and six active cases in the nursing home unit, he said. He did not say how many of those cases were among residents or among staff, nor did he say if there were recovered cases.
There are no cases in the dementia care unit, Cyr said.
“Rumford Community Home is following (Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention)-recommended infection prevention and control practices and testing negative residents at least twice weekly,” Cyr said in an email to the Sun Journal.
“We are working closely with our CDC liaison, North Country Associates and the Central Maine Health Care Infection Prevention team,” he added.
It is not clear if residents were provided with Paxlovid, an antiviral therapy used to treat COVID, or other treatments.
This is at least the second COVID-19 outbreak at the facility since the pandemic began. Almost exactly one year ago, an outbreak there grew to at least 65 cases, 52 of which were among residents. There were at least four residents who died of COVID-related symptoms as a direct result of the outbreak.
