DURHAM — The Newell Brook Road section of state Route 9 has been closed by the Maine Department of Transportation due to a culvert failure.

Because the road had begun to collapse, it was closed at 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Durham Fire Department Chief Rob Tripp.

The Department of Transportation will begin repairs Wednesday once the water level in the culvert decreases, Tripp said.

A detour is planned from Plummer Hill Road to Old Brunswick Road.

The state estimates the replacement of the culvert will take nearly two weeks to complete, with the approximate cost ranging from $300,000 to $500,000.
