AUBURN — Edward Little took care of business Friday against Leavitt and now can look forward to its next game.
The Red Eddies, led by Mohamed Adow’s three goals, defeated the Hornets 6-0 in a boys soccer game.
“The big thing today was to stay healthy, and we have a game at Camden Hills tomorrow morning,” Edward Little coach Max Thompson said after Friday’s game. “The biggest thing for us is we didn’t get any injuries and we are really ready for that game tomorrow — it’s a huge game for us.”
Edward Little (9-0-1) is the top-ranked team in the Class A North Heal Points, as of Friday night, while Camden Hills is fourth. The game will be played in Rockport at 10 a.m.
Along with Mohamed Adow’s hat trick, Campbell Cassidy scored twice for the Red Eddies on Friday.
Adow said that Edward Little’s offense was powered by strong passing.
“I think we (weren’t) selfish and (were) moving the ball up and down (the field) and (did) not get too goal happy,” Adow said. “We moved the ball pretty good, and we had a good result — we finished our chances.”
This was the second meeting this season between the teams. Edward Little defeated Leavitt 4-0 on Sept. 17. Hornets’ coach Ryan Greenlaw said containing the Red Eddies’ speed was a priority Friday.
“They are really fast on the outside (positions), and we knew we needed to slow them down a little bit,” Greenlaw said. “We needed to contain them before they could get breakaways. We did a little bit of that, but we could have done a little more.”
Adow opened the scoring after midfielder Abidhakim “Dayow” Daud sent a through ball in the 18-yard box. Adow chased the ball down and ripped a shot past Leavitt goalie Vanya Bezhenar in the eighth minute.
Campbell Cassidy scored three minutes later as he corralled the ball after a corner kick and fired a shot into the goal for a 2-0 Red Eddies lead.
Leavitt’s (2-9) best chance of the first half came in the 16th minute when forward Logan Berube had a breakaway, but his shot went wide of the left post.
“(Logan) had a couple of good runs in the beginning of the game, and then at the end of the game, he had a few more,” Greenlaw said. “He does a good job creating opportunities. (Edward Little’s) defense was able to step in and cut off our angles to slow us down.”
Adow’s second goal came when he was tripped in the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-0 lead in the 34th minute.
Campbell Cassidy scored at the end of the first half to send the Red Eddies into halftime up 4-0.
Adow finished his hat trick early on in the second half. Daud sent a cross in the box and Adow kicked the ball in the air and into the goal to make it 5-0.
Adow said the Edward Little’s crosses showed improvement in Friday’s match.
“We have been having problems crossing, and we had some really good crosses today,” Adow said.
Freshman Ngengele Adolphe scored the Eddies’ final goal to stretch the lead to 6-0.
“I think we have a lot of talent and ability to score in different ways,” Thompson said. “I think what we are trying to do, is score the easiest way. We aren’t looking for any theatrics or anything too spectacular.”
