PARIS — Oxford Hills spread the ball around to its skill players in a 45-8 win over Lewiston in a Class A football matchup Saturday at Gouin Athletic Complex.

Ten players touched the ball for the unbeaten Vikings (5-0), whose game plan was use their abundance of talented players to spark the offense.

“I get defending us is a little tricky since we have so many weapons in so many different spots,” Oxford Hills coach Mark Soehren said. “I want to make sure we have weapons and the kids are getting touches, and the other part is we look at the scheme and what (the opposition) is doing.”

Lewiston (2-3), meanwhile, was hoping to build off last week’s big victory over Scarborough, but struggled against Class A-leading Oxford Hills.

“We had a great week of practice and we focused, but the Vikings were a better team today,” Lewiston coach Jason Versey said. “We still had those mental errors, the penalties and the things of that nature.”

The Vikings welcomed back one of their weapons, quarterback Eli Soehren, who had been sidelined since suffering an injury early in the second game of the season.

After Eli Soehren threw a 26-yard pass to Tanner Bickford to put Oxford Hills on the Blue Devils’ 17-yard line, the Vikings turned to their run game. Three straight carries by Trey Morrison capped the five-play drive, including an 11-yard touchdown run on a sweep to the left that put Oxford Hills up 7-0.

Penalties hampered the Blue Devils’ second drive, which ended with an interception that set the Vikings up with the ball at their own 46.

Paced by Teigan Pelletier receptions of 15 and 14 yards, the Oxford Hills offense drove into the red zone. On second-and-goal from the Lewiston 8-yard line, Morrison scored on another sweep play to extend the lead to 14-0.

Morrison finished the game with 87 yards on 12 carries.

“(Morrison) is a really good running back. He ran really well against (Thornton Academy), and the last couple of games, we haven’t gotten him going,” Mark Soehren said. “We didn’t know how it would go against Lewiston’s (defensive) line, but our linemen did a great job, and Trey did a good job hitting holes.”

Lewiston caught a break in the second quarter, on its third drive of the game, when Oxford Hills fumbled a punt and the Blue Devils recovered.

Three plays later, on a third down, Randall found Eli Bigelow on a post route for what appeared to be a 48-yard touchdown, but Lewiston was called for holding, which negated the big play.

“We had a touchdown called back; that really stopped the momentum, it would have been 14-7, but instead it sets us back,” Versey said. “Our kids, that really impacted them.”

Bigelow caught a 16-yard pass to set up a fourth-and-5 at the Oxford Hills 45. He then ran the ball, but was stopped after 4 yards, and the Blue Devils turned the ball over on downs.

The Vikings changed quarterbacks for their third drive, inserting junior Brady Truman in place of Eli Soehren. The move was planned prior to the game.

“The plan was to be conservative with Eli; Brady is a good quarterback,” Mark Soehren said. “I told them we would go one or two series and see how Eli feels. I said he would definitely come out after two (series). And of course, Eli wanted to stay in (and) Brady wants to play. Both did a really nice job managing all their drives.”

Truman threw a 39-yard pass to Teigan Pelletier for a touchdown and the Vikings lead extended to 21-0 after the extra point.

After Lewiston turned the ball over again on downs, Oxford Hills’ Lincoln Merrill had a 32-yard run to the Lewiston 29-yard line, which was followed by a 23-yard catch by Bickford to set up a first-and-goal. Hunter Tardiff finished the drive with a 6-yard run for the Vikings’ second touchdown of the second quarter and a 28-0 lead.

Lewiston turned the ball over for the third straight drive, and with Eli Soehren back in at QB, Pelletier hauled in a 23-yard scoring strike in the final minute of the second quarter.

“The (second) one Eli threw me a touchdown; we just have a connection from last year,” Pelletier said. “The (first) one Brady, we have had a connection the last three games. I think it was the connection and knowing they were going to throw to me, and I was at the right place at the right time.”

Pelletier had five catches for 123 yards in the game.

The Blue Devils tried to manufacture a drive with under a minute left in the second quarter, but Jeffrey Randall threw an  interception on a long pass attempt.

Bickford added to Oxford Hills’ lead in the third quarter, running in from 9 yards out to make it 42-0.

Bickford finished with 71 yards of total offense on six touches (runs and receptions).

Brady Delamater finished the Vikings’ scoring with a 17-yard field goal for a 45-0 lead.

Lewiston scored its only points in the fourth quarter when the majority of the offensive line shifted to the far left side of the line of scrimmage and Randall found Bigelow with a 22-yard pass on the right side for a touchdown.

Bigelow had 12 combined runs and catches for 79 yards of total offense.

“I wanted something to give my kids a spark and let them feel good,” Versey said. “At the end of the day, this is a football game, it’s a game that kids can play and enjoy. At the end of the day, I want them to have a good experience and we are a growing young team.”

Farid Muhammed-Aceto ran in the two-point conversion. He had 11 carries for 39 yards in the game.

Soehren finished 9 of 15 passing for 135 yards and one touchdown, while Truman threw for 77 yards and a score.
