NORWAY — In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Community Lunch, all past and present program volunteers are invited to a potluck luncheon set for noon Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the First Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St.

Community Lunch is a program of the Oxford Hills Area Association of Churches.

“The OHAAC Board of Trustees unanimously agrees that the most fitting way to celebrate 30 years of delicious free hot lunches served weekly at Community Lunch is to honor the volunteers who cooked and served those lunches,” said Marilyn Hammond, association president, according to a news release from the Rev. Fayre Stephenson, association secretary.

The first Community Lunch meal was served on March 4, 1992, at the First Universalist Church of Norway. Since then, hot meals were served every Wednesday until the spring of 2020, when the lunches were suspended because of the COVID pandemic. Since April 2020, volunteers, under the direction of OHAAC Treasurer Faylene McKeen, have staffed a roadside food bank every Wednesday.

“We have been advised that it is now safe to reopen our Community Lunch meal program. Knowing that the roadside food bank served a great need during the COVID emergency, we are grateful to be able, once again, to provide hot meals and fellowship on Wednesdays, beginning Nov. 2, at 11:30 a.m. at the First Universalist Church of Norway,” said Hammond.
