The Mechanic Falls Historical Society plans to sponsor a tour and present a history of the Advent Christian Campground at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 128 Lewiston St.

The campground is located on Route 121, about a mile from the center of town.

Patricia Dyer and Lindsey Anderson will conduct a site tour of the campground which was founded in 1889, according to a news release from the society.

According to the campground’s history, the 15-acre property was purchased from Walter Smith for $350. For more than 130 years the campground has provided spiritual guidance and physical activities for its many visitors.

From its history: “From local areas, people came for the day by horse and carriage, to hear an especially good speaker, and left for home again in the evening. The Maine Central and Grand Trunk railroads brought in many visitors to the grounds. Upon occasion special trains stopped at the rear of the campgrounds to discharge or take on passengers. The completion of the electric car line in 1907 also proved a convenient means of transportation, as that line stopped at the front entrance to the area.”

The public is welcome to attend and is asked to bring a flashlight.
