Auburn Public Library plans to offer a food demonstration, Preserving the Harvest: Canning and Freezing Basics, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the Androscoggin Community Room at the 49 Spring St. library.
This home food preservation demonstration will teach the basic steps for canning and freezing. Participants will receive home food preservation fact sheets, and can learn recommended methods for preserving foods, the latest and safest recipes, about equipment to ensure safety, and how to check for properly sealed jars.
Participants can bring their own pressure canner dial gauge to class for a free accuracy test, according to a news release from the library.
Kate McCarty has been a food systems professional at UMaine Extension since 2009, after serving in the AmeriCorps VISTA program. She has completed the Master Food Preserver program, an intensive, hands-on training in all aspects of home food preservation. She manages the volunteer efforts of the 60-plus Master Food Preserver volunteers statewide and teaches food preservation programs in York, Cumberland, Oxford, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc and Franklin counties.
