It could be said that Winona Davenport and her family are on the verge of tying a world record for golf foursomes.
Four generations of Davenports are entered as a team in the Aug. 29 Camp Sunshine Tournament at Point Sebago. With the Davenport foursome entered in that tournament, it will tie a generational record.
Winona Davenport, 87, resides in the Franklin County town of Phillips. Her partners on the team will be her son, Gordon Davenport Jr., who is flying to the tournament from Bartow, Florida, where he lives. Her grandson, Gordon Davenport III, will be driving from his home in Madbury, New Hampshire, with his 10-year-old daughter, Sascha-Belle.
Winona Davenport began playing golf at age 56.
“I was hooked on the game after the first time I played,” she said.
She has been a regular in the Camp Sunshine Tournament for nearly 20 years.
“I missed two years because of surgeries,” she said of hip and knee operations she underwent.
She plays golf regularly at a unique course in Phillips, just off Route 4, called “Just A Field.” It is three holes, with three greens, but 18 tee boxes. The membership is $35 annually. It has a Monday men’s league, a Wednesday women’s league and there is a scramble every Sunday.
Of the condition of the course, she said: “It is very crude. It is backyard grass on the greens.”
Openings remain in the Camp Sunshine Tournament, with information available at 207-655-3800, ext. 813. Camp Sunshine, located on Sebago Lake in Casco, is for critically ill children and their families. There are 40 family units for weekly sessions. Camp Sunshine is one of Maine’s special charities.
