NORWAY — Dr. Chuck Radis, author of “Island Medicine: Life, Community and Healing on a Maine Island” will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Norway Memorial Library at 258 Main St.

According to a news release from the library, Radis graduated from Bates College in 1976 with a degree in biology. He was drawn to a career in medicine after meeting an osteopathic family practice bush pilot in Baja, Mexico.

Following an internal medicine residency, the young doctor moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and traveled by boat to the four year-round islands in Casco Bay, logging more than 100 house calls each year.

“Island Medicine” is a follow-up to his book, “Go by Boat: Stories of a Maine Island Doctor,” written last year. His stories ranging from humorous to heart-breaking are described as All Creatures Great and Small meet Doc Martin.

Throughout his years as both a primary health care physician and as a specialist, Radis has published both in peer-reviewed scientific journals and in the popular press. He has written on the narcotic epidemic, the logic of expanding Medicare for all Americans, and opposition to physician-assisted suicide. His experience in primary care has enriched his work in Public Health programs in South Sudan, Uganda, India, and Ghana.

As the founder and medical director for the Maine-African Partnership for Social Justice (mapsj.org), he travels regularly to the Kiryandongo United Nations Settlement in Uganda where he partners with refugee groups in innovative public health programs.

This program is an in-person program that is free to attend and open to the public. Masks that fully cover the mouth and nose are required regardless of vaccination status.
