Lesser-known composer Arthur Foote was born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1853. The son of the publisher of the Salem Gazette, he was late to music beginning piano lessons at age 14. But he entered Harvard University to study music and received Harvard’s first Masters of Arts degree in music – in fact the first such degree in America. He went on to compose steadily for 45 years and his chamber music was widely admired and performed. As a composer he came of age during the late 19th century, where he became one of the Boston Six which was bringing American music to a new level of craftsmanship and sophistication.
Susan Rotholz, a long time artist with Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival, will bring her virtuosity to Foote’s “Nocturne” which begins and ends with a melodious, dreamy song. Throughout the movement, flute and strings pass melodies back and forth. The tonal combinations are beautiful, the harmonies rich, and the rhythms varied.
