100 Years Ago: 1922
About 150 were present at the banquet held in the New Hartwell Restaurant, Lisbon Falls, this evening. The occasion was the 20th anniversary of the Lisbon Falls Board of Trade and the dedication of the Hartwell Restaurant. About 26 members of the Lisbon Chamber of Commerce were present as guests of the Lisbon Falls Board of Trade. Pettengill’s orchestra furnished music during the banquet and for the dancing which followed. Wild roses were used for favors.
50 Years Ago: 1972
Gov. Kenneth Curtis will return from his summer vacation to a nicer kitchen. At a cost of $4,728 the kitchen in the governor’s mansion will be modernized. Curtis and the Executive Council Wednesday approved a transfer of $1,500 from the contingent account to help pay for the renovations. That amount will go for a dishwasher and counter.
25 Years Ago: 1997
A new pageant system opened in Auburn. Stephanie Bernatchez, director of the Magical Memories Pageant and the Pageant Friends & Fun Magazine, has opened a pageant for Maine girls only. The new pageant is called “Stars of Maine.” One national pageant will be held per year with girls from all over Maine vying for the new title along with cash prizes, gifts. trophies, crowns, banners and flowers. All contestants will receive a tiara, gift and trophy just for competing. The pageant is open to all girls from six weeks to 25 years. The competition consists of formal modeling, interview, talent and photogenic. Talent is not a requirement.
