LEWISTON — Fire crews were called to Orange Street on Wednesday afternoon when flames were reported on a second-floor porch.
Police, paramedics and firefighters went to 8 Orange St. about 3:30 p.m. after flames were reported near the back of the three-story home.
A man, woman and child appeared to have scrambled to safety from their home and were being interviewed by police a short distance from the burning building. They did not appear to be injured.
The cause of the fire was later determined to be improperly disposed smoking materials.
Firefighters made quick work of the blaze, dousing the flames before it could spread to other parts of the building. By about 3:45 p.m., the fire was declared under control.
Lewiston Fire Investigator Paul Ouellette said all occupants of the five apartments in the building were able to return to their homes. Damage to the building was estimated at $5,000.
Orange Street connects Webster and Sabattus streets in an area between Pine Street and East Avenue.
