I am puzzled by the more than apparent discrepancy being shown in the media about the PFAS problems here in Maine. (“Even trace amounts of PFAS chemicals pose health risk, new federal advisory says,” June 17).

It would seem to me that the EPA is extremely late in its actions to curtail the poisoning of many Mainers.

It seems to me that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is locking the barn doors after the animals have escaped. The EPA was assumed by the public to be in the business of protecting the citizens of our once-great nation to prevent such disasters.

Am I wrong, or are the millions of dollars that the EPA cost us taxpayers being wasted? It seems to this poor citizen that here is yet another case of a huge government program and waste of taxpayer money for protection that was never being done.

PFAS has been around for years, especially prevalent in paper making and various fire safety products. Didn’t some bright government employee of the EPA put two and two together and look at where all this potentially-caustic product was being used, and what the possible end results were?

Inquiring minds would like to know.
