GREENWOOD — American Legion Jackson-Silver Post 68 is changing its schedule of ceremonies for Memorial Day — Monday, May 30.
This year, from 10 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m., the post will support Mundt-Allen Post 81 in the dedication of the Bethel Veterans Honor Roll Park and Monument, the culmination of 11 years of work from inception to completion.
The monument bears the names of all who have served from the community and its environs from the Revolution to the present, and the park is graced with benches donated by local families and organizations, according to a news release from Post 68.
Following the dedication, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Post 68 will return to its post to complete American Legion protocols, with Auxiliary Unit 68 placing a wreath at the post’s own veterans monument and casting flowers upon the waters to honor the Naval services.
The post sgt.-at-Arms will place the National Banner at the base of a soldiers silhouette, and the chaplain will offer a closing benediction, followed by a salute from the Post Firing Squad, and the playing of taps.
This schedule will not allow Post 68 to participate earlier in the day at annual ceremonies held at the East Bethel Cemetery and in the afternoon Memorial Day ceremonies conducted by the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Woodstock, as has been its tradition.
