100 Years Ago: 1922

While cranking his automobile Friday morning Sherburne Spaulding of Winter Street, Lewiston, received a broken wrist when the engine “kicked.” He was assisted to the C.M.G. hospital by Officer Staples who was on duty and an x-ray was taken.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Flowering trees and May baskets always announced the arrival of springtime for New England youngsters ‘back when.” May basket time was full of excitement for children and floral nosegays were always placed in the pretty baskets. Outmoded now is the delightful custom of hanging May baskets, but, fortunately, flowering trees still are with us. One of the loveliest is the beautiful magnolia at the Lewiston home of well-known Tony Petropulos and each year when the Petropulos magnolia is in full bloom Holland St. is very busy as local people drive by to admire the handsome harbinger of Spring.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Teachers at the Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls will be special guests of Tyrian Lodge of Freemasons Thursday as part of an appreciation night. This event is in keeping with the annual community service and appreciation night when the Masons honor those who have contributed to the community in a particular way. After the dinner and a few remarks from the event chairman, Maine humorist John McDonald will entertain the group with some Downeast humor. McDonald has a syndicated newspaper column that runs in 12 papers in the state, and he also hosts a radio talk show on WGAN in Portland.
