CMCC’S ARMSTRONG HONORED: Central Maine Community College sophomore catcher Corey Armstrong was announced Thursday as the Yankee Small College Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week of April 19.

Armstrong, a former Monmouth Academy standout, went 6-for-9 at the plate with four RBIs and a walk-off hit against UMaine-Presque Isle.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS UMF: The Monks (25-11) used strong pitching and defense, allowing just two runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Beavers (8-20), by scores of 4-1 and 6-1, in Standish.

St. Joseph’s scored three unearned runs in the first game with Matt Thibault adding an RBI single. Matt Haines drove in UMF’s lone run.

Thibault and Drew Heaney each had two RBI a piece in the second game. Zach Miles and Michael Wearne each had one RBI.

TUFTS 18, BATES 2: Kyle Cortese and Ryan Noone each hit a two-run home run and Jimmy Evans launched a solo homer as the Jumbos (21-10, 6-6 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (6-23, 1-8) in Lewiston.

Noone and Miles Reid led Tufts with three RBI a piece. Michael Volgende went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out nine.

Drew Fallon hit a solo home run for Bates and Bryan Gotti had an RBI groundout. Teddie Nelson took the pitching loss.

MANUEL TIES FOR BIG EAST TITLE: Caleb Manuel of Topsham qualified for the NCAA Division I golf championship Wednesday by winning a playoff after he tied for the individual title at the Big East championship in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Manuel, a sophomore at UConn, closed with a 1-under 71 for a three-day score of 11-under 205. He took a six-stroke lead into the final round but wound up in a tie for first with Seton Hall’s Gregor Tait, who shot a 65.

Manuel opened with a 68 on Monday, then shot a 66 on Tuesday.

UConn finished third in the team competition behind Seton Hall and Marquette.

The NCAA championship is scheduled for May 27 through June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
