AUGUSTA — A man arrested after a shooting early Saturday in Randolph was being held on $7,500 bail Monday at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta.
Bail for Eric C. Cooper, 35, was set Monday during his initial appearance at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.
Cooper has been charged with two counts of trafficking in scheduled drugs, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and violating conditions of release.
A 911 call shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday reporting a man had been shot in Randolph drew law enforcement to the Belmont Avenue area.
The investigation that followed, including a hospital interview with the 42-year-old man injured in the shooting, led detectives from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office to secure a warrant to search 14 Belmont Ave., where they found cash, fentanyl, cocaine and weapons, according to officials.
As a result, Cooper was arrested and initially held on $30,000 bail.
On Monday, Kennebec County Assistant District Attorney Amanda Seekins asked for bail to be set at $10,000 because of the drug trafficking changes and out of concern for the safety of the community.
Seekins said Cooper has prior drug convictions and was violating conditions of his release on another charge.
Erik Paulson, the lawyer who was representing Cooper on Monday, asked instead for bail to be set at $2,500, or $1,000 with a supervisory contract from Maine Pretrial Services.
Paulson said he had not seen the warrant and was relying on the affidavit that had been filed and contained no information linking Cooper to the shooting. He noted that the shooting victim had been interviewed and was uncooperative.
Paulson also said he thought the quantity of the drugs seized was relatively small.
Seekins said Cooper was not charged in connection with the shooting, and the amount of the drugs — 15.7 grams of cocaine and 5.4 grams of fentanyl — was enough to presume trafficking.
Justice Nicholas Stokes set bail at $7,500, or $5,000 with a Maine Pretrial Services contract.
Stokes also required Cooper not have contact with the victim or with Meredith Prugh, 40, who was issued a summons on Saturday on two counts of aggravated unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and violating conditions of release.
While weapons were found and seized during the course of the search, the gun used in the shooting was not found during Saturday’s search.
On Monday, Lt. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said the gun has not yet been recovered, and a person of interest in the case had yet to be located.
Read said the shooting appeared to have been accidental.
