Trista Smith, 19, selects green peppers Tuesday for Darlene Conant at the Seventh-day Adventist Church pantry at 310 Minot Ave. in Auburn. Conant runs Salt and Light Community Center in Auburn where at-risk teens make weekly meals with support of the center’s directors. The group cooks and eats together, learning meal preparation skills and socialization. Smith volunteers every week at the food pantry. “It makes me feel confident to be able to talk to new people,” she said. Volunteers with “strong backs and strong arms” are always welcome, according to pantry staff. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
