The Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy and Scott Foyt, placed second in the State of Maine Virtual Academic Decathlon Championship on March 5. The Monmouth team can now compete in the National Academic Decathlon Virtual Championship in April.
Monmouth team members won the following medals: Elise Zwetsloot, Allyson Lewis, Sam Schultz (Bronze — Science, Math, Silver — Social Science); Loris Rahain (Silver — Art); June Foyt (Bronze — Speech, Silver — Economics); Olivia Degan (Bronze — Social Science, Silver —Math, Interview); Christina Bond (Bronze — Music, Essay, Gold — Literature, Art, and third-highest scoring carsity student in Maine); Holly Hunt (Bronze — Literature, Music, Social Science, Math, Silver — Science, Economics, Essay, and third-highest scoring honor’s student in Maine; Ethan Handley (Bronze — Music, Silver — Art, Essay, Speech, Interview, Gold — Literature, Economics, Social Science, and highest individual team score, and second-highest scoring scholastic student in Maine; and Austin Hasenfus-Smith (Bronze — Math, Speech, Silver — Science, Essay, Interview, Gold — Music, Art, Economics, Social Science, and highest-scoring varsity student in Maine).
The overall theme for Academic Decathlon changes every year. Last year’s theme was the Cold War, this year’s is Water: A Most Essential Resource, and next year’s will be the American Revolution.
