After trailing heading into the fourth quarter, the Bates women’s lacrosse team outplayed Skidmore in the final period to earn a 14-13 victory Tuesday in Beverley, Massachusetts.

Dana Swartz scored three of her four goals for the Bobcats in the fourth, including the game-winner with two minutes remaining.

Bates (2-3) shutout Skidmore (0-3) 3-0 in the first quarter and scored the first four goals of the game before the Thoroughbreds bounced back with a six-goal second and cut the Bobcats’ advantage to one goal, 7-6, heading into halftime.

Skidmore led by one, 9-8, after three quarters. Swartz and Kate Loughlin scored the first two goals of the fourth to put Bates back in the lead. Skidmore’s Lily Schwartzman scored one of her game-high six goals to tie the game at 10-10 with about nine minutes remaining.

The Bobcats scored the next three goals — Caroline Taggert, Jordyn Tveter and Swartz — in less than 90 seconds to lead 13-10 with 6:35 remaining.

The Thoroughbreds again bounced back and scored three unanswered goals to tie the score at 13-13 with 3:49 to play, but Swartz broke the tie with an unassisted goal.

Jordyn Tveter also tallied four goals to join Swartz as Bates’ top scorer. Camille Pontone added in three goals for the Thoroughbreds.

Cammie Lavoie made nine saves for Bates, while Skidmore goalie Liv Kazanjian made 19.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL
CMCC SWEPT: Central Maine Community College was swept for the second day in a row by Penn State Brandywine, 8-3 in the first game and 7-3 in the second in Aston, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday.

In the first game, a four-run third inning by Penn State broke a 1-1 tie and carried the Nittany Lions to the victory. Penn State also scored three runs in the sixth. 

Meghan Ferry drove in three runs on two hits and also scored twice. Payton Landis tallied two hits, also, and drove in two runs. Crystal Cassario picked up the win (5-0) on the circle, striking out 11 CMCC batters. 

Mustangs center fielder Olivia Gallan scored twice and drove a run in on a walk.

In game two, Penn State (9-2) seized control early, scoring four unanswered runs in the first three innings.

Ferry scored twice on three hits and also drove in two runs. Sam Bagosy, Gianna Terpolilli and Karly Rees all tallied two hits a piece. 

Rebecca Halford (4-2) struck out seven and earned the win for the Nittany Lions.

Emily Wormwood went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in a run for the Mustangs (6-7). 

Olivia Scott (2-3) took the loss from the circle, giving up four earned runs.

COLLEGE BASEBALL
STETSON 12, MAINE 1: The Hatters (12-5) scored six times in the second inning and cruised to a win over the Black Bears (3-11) in DeLand, Florida.

Yohann Dessureault had a double, a home run and drove in four runs for Stetson. Cameron Hill added three hits, and Kyle Ball had a two-run homer.

Jordan Schulefand had a double for Maine.

SNOW SPORTS
UMF ATHLETES EXCEL: The University of Maine at Farmington men’s freeski team placed sixth in the team combined standings at last week’s U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championships last week.

Individually, Mullein Francis finished 27th overall in the women’s Nordic competition. 

Francis finished 31st in the 7.5-kilometer freestyle race in 31:58.4, sixth in the classic sprint quarterfinal with a time of 4:37.7, and 31st with a time of 1:15:16.9 in the 15k classic mass start event.

UMF placed second in the rail jam with 20 place points, recording the program’s best finish in the event. Ryan Brueninghaus was fifth overall in the event with fellow Beavers Samuel Scheff following in sixth and Carson Theriault in ninth. 

In the freeski slopestyle competition, Brueninghaus finished ninth with 73.33 points, followed by Theriault in 14th with 60.67. Scheff earned 36.67 points in the preliminaries and did not advance to the finals.
