The Maine Principals’ Association has postponed all high school basketball tournament games scheduled for Friday in Portland, Augusta and Bangor because of a snowstorm expected to impact the state.
Regional finals for girls and boys in Class A South and Class B South that had been scheduled for Friday have been shifted to Saturday and will be played at the Portland Expo instead of Cross Insurance Arena.
“You cannot control the weather,” said Mike Burnham, the MPA’s executive director. “The timing of the storm is that it’s going to snow all day.
“It’s not like there’s going to be a break where we can squeeze the games in.”
The four games Saturday at the Portland Expo will be single admission, starting at noon with the Class B South girls’ final between York and Oceanside. It will be followed by the Class B South boys’ final (Yarmouth vs. Medomak Valley) at 2 p.m., the Class A South girls’ final (Brunswick vs. Greely) at 4 p.m., and the Class A South boys’ final (Falmouth vs. Marshwood) at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s schedule for regional finals in Class AA North and Class AA South at Cross Insurance Arena will remain intact.
In Augusta, the Class A North finals also have been postponed from Friday to Saturday. Those games now will be played at 7 p.m. (girls) and 8:45 p.m. (boys) on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.
Those games will be a separate admission from four games earlier Saturday in Augusta.
The Class C South finals have been shifted from the evening to the morning, at 10 a.m. (girls) and 11:45 a.m. (boys). The Class D South finals are now scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (girls) and 3:15 p.m. (boys).
In Bangor, the Class B North finals will start earlier than planned on Saturday to make room later in the day for the four Class C North semifinals that were supposed to be played Friday. The Class C North finals are now scheduled for Monday evening at Cross Insurance Arena.
