The Central Maine Community College men’s basketball team found itself down by double-digits at halftime of Tuesday’s Yankee Small College Conference tournament game against rival Southern Maine CC, but the Mustangs were only able to rally halfway.
Central Maine’s season came to an end at the hands of the SeaWolves in a 73-66 semifinal win for Southern Maine on its home court in South Portland.
The Mustangs were down by 14 at halftime, 43-29, and were able to claw back some in the second half thanks to some improved shooting. Central Maine outshot Southern Maine in field-goal percentage (48.0 to 45.5), 3-pointers (45.5 to 40.0) and free throws (66.7 to 65.0). But the Mustangs were plagued by turnovers, losing that category 16-5.
Jordan Dudgeon led the Mustangs with 23 points, including 5 for 8 on 3-pointers, and senior Corey David closed out his Central Maine career with 11 points.
Ian Regan led all scorers with 24 points for Southern Maine, including 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. DeSean Cromwell added 12 points.
The Central Maine women play in a YSCC semifinal at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Paul Smith’s College.
