FARMINGTON — Amelia Stokes wasn’t expecting to win the MVC Alpine skiing slalom title on Saturday at Titcomb Mountain.

Stokes did pull of the victory, though, with a combined time of 1 minute, 30.45 second in her two slalom runs at the KVAC/MVC championships. Stokes’ first-place finish helped the Lakers win their fourth girls slalom title in a row with a team point total of 791.

“It’s awesome,” Stokes said. “I wasn’t expecting it because our team has been up and down and we are all very close in time. I wasn’t expecting to get them all, but it’s really exciting. It’s even more exciting to win as a team. The team is way more important.”

Stokes said she was focused on winning individually and with her team.

“Our biggest competition in the MVCs is really our own teammates,” said Stokes, who added that many of the Lakers have been skiing together since third grade. “Our goal today was to win as a team, and we were kind of shocked and impressed to get really good personal results. Overall today I obviously compare myself to some in the KVAC, but I was focused on the MVC. I wanted to get a good second run.”

Two of Stokes’ teammates finished right behind her in the girls individual MVC competition: Bristol Quimby was second (1:31.85) and Breezy Quimby placed third (1:32.02).

The Telstar girls finished in second place as a team with 774 points, followed by Mountain Valley (561).

On the boys side, Charlie Pye of Mt. Abram won the MVC slalom with a combined time of 1:25.72.

“I felt like I skied pretty smooth, and I was just happy to have some fun skiing,” Pye said. “As long as I get a finish, I’ll be happy, and I am pretty happy.”

Pye said he was focused on finishing well for the team, and his victory helped the Roadrunners to a second MVC slalom title in a row with 785 points. In second place was Mountain Valley (773), and Winthrop was third (199).

The boys KVAC slalom title was won by Maranacook’s Sam McKee with a combined time of 1:20.39.

McKee was confident in his abilities but also expected Mt. Blue’s Josh Smith to keep it close.

“I got second in the giant slalom, and Josh is good here, so I wasn’t expecting a lot but I went out there and it worked out,” McKee said. “It felt really good. Wicked fast. This course is really fast. I got first after the first run, so I just wanted to hold on.”

McKee was followed by Smith (1:21.76) and his Maranacook teammate Thatcher Riley (1:22.48).

McKee and Riley helped the Black Bears to a KVAC slalom runner-up finish, as well, with Maranacook tallying 764 points, while Mt. Blue claimed the title with 766 points. Edward Little was third with 756.

Mt. Blue’s Vivian Cormier took home the girls KVAC slalom title with a combined time of 1:27.29. Teammates Sadie McDonough (1:28.06) and Katie Yeaton (1:28.56) followed in second and third, respectively, helping the Cougars (791) earn the girls team title.

“I wanted to just get two solid runs in so that the team can place well,” Cormier said. “I wanted to make the top-10. I just wanted to be recognized, but, really, we wanted to win as a team.”

Cormier felt she was in a good spot after her first run. The gates were closer together on Saturday’s second runs, forcing skiers to change their approach.

“My first run I had a couple bobbles, but I felt I was in a good position, so the second run I worked a little harder,” Cormier said. “With the course (on the second run) I had to work my skis a lot more to get a higher line so that I wasn’t late.”

Camden Hills finished in second with 752 points, followed by Oxford Hills’ 745 points.
