Two weeks ago, the Maine Nordiques scored six unanswered goals to defeat the Jamestown Rebels.

Friday night in an NAHL East Division game, they got behind again, this time against the Johnstown Tomahawks, but they stormed back to score six unanswered goals for a 6-5, overtime win at 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

“There’s a lot of resolve in the boys,” Nordiques coach Matt Pinchevsky said. “They understand they need to hit the second gear. If we start in that gear and hit our details early enough, these are games that can be torn wide open.”

The Nordiques’ (12-21-4, 28 points) fortunes turned in the second period after giving up five goals in the first period, scoring three times in the first five minutes of the middle frame.

Tyler Gaulin scored 72 seconds into the second with an unassisted effort. Just before the two-and-half minute mark, Brendan Gibbons scored his fifth goal of the year.

Jonny Meiers scored his eighth goal of the season on a short-handed tally at the five-minute mark.

Gaulin scored his second goal of the period with five minutes remaining in the frame on the power play to cut the deficit to 5-4.

“Some veteran players stepped up and produced, which they are capable of,” Pinchevsky said. “You know what? Some veteran players that are capable of producing that were maybe off the scoresheet. They did what it took to win. You have guys like Patrick Schmiedlin, and Tristan Fasig blocking a shot and he scores in OT. Ignat Belov was all over the ice. The list goes on and on.”

Midway through the third period, Aidan Connolly scored his 11th goal of the season on the power play to tie the game at 5-5.

Fasig scored 2:44 in the overtime session to beat Johnstown goalie Matthew O’Donnell (27 saves).

“(Johnstown) had that one chance from Jake Black, but he didn’t put it in the back of the net and goalie Gus Holt was ready for it anyway,” Pinchevsky said. “We counter-attacked and we buried it. We had chances to end that overtime sooner than it did. It’s a really good feeling when the guy you know can get it done, gets it done.”

The Tomahawks (22-13-5, 49 points) opened the scoring nearly seven minutes into the game, with Johnny Ulicny finding the back of the net.

The scoring outburst came midway through the first period. David Wilcox scored an unassisted tally for a 2-0 lead. Egan Schmidt scored a minute later for a 3-0 advantage. Black scored his 26th goal of the season — which is second in the entire NAHL to former Twin City Thunder player Talon Sigurdson, who has 29 with the Alaska Wolverines.

“We didn’t hit some details on the faceoff on those middle goals,” Pinchevsky said. “…We have goaltending that can help us win and we proved it tonight. Whether it’s Avery (Sturtz with seven saves) or Gus (14 saves), they are giving us the effort to win. We just need to make sure we are hitting our details in front of them.”

Ryan Vellucci scored late in the first period to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Nordiques go for the sweep Saturday night with a 7 p.m. faceoff against the Tomahawks in Johnstown.
