BOOTHBAY HARBOR — Autumn Freeman’s 21 first-quarter points helped Mountain Valley take a big early lead and cruise to a 59-38 MVC girls basketball victory over Boothbay on Thursday.

Freeman hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter, after which Mountain Valley led 23-9. The Falcons pushed the lead to 41-18 by halftime.

Freeman finished the game with six 3s and 40 points. Alana Young added six points for Mountain Valley (1-0), while Brooke Brown and Maisy Chase added four apiece.

Jaelynn Crocker led Boothbay (0-2) with 18 points.

SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 39, OAK HILL 24: Olivia Mastine and Jaydn Pingree scored 12 points each to pace the Phoenix past the Raiders in Wales.

Spruce Mountain held Oak Hill to seven first-half points (three in the first quarter and four in the second).

Paige Gonya was the Raiders’ top scorer with eight points.

KENTS HILL 65, BUCKFIELD 23: Logan McDonald scored 17 points to lead the Huskies in Kents Hill.

Alanna Batchelder added 10 points for Kents Hill.

Kianna Finnegan led Buckfield with six points.

MADISON 47, TELSTAR 33: Alison Griffeth scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs in Bethel.

Mackenzie Robbins scored 10 points, while Marina Gilman added eight points for Madison (2-0).

Morgan Zetts led Telstar (0-2) with 13 points. Karen Marshall added 12 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL
ST. DOMINIC 63, RICHMOND 35: Gabe Carey poured in 20 points and the Saints improved to 3-0 with a win over the Bobcats (0-2) in Auburn.

Carey, who hit three 3-pointers, led four St. Dom’s scorers in double figures: Jonathan Tangilamesu added 16 and Taylor Varney and Michael Stowe scored 10 apiece.

GIRLS HOCKEY
EDWARD LITTLE/LEAVITT/POLAND 1, CHEVERUS/OLD ORCHARD BEACH/KENNEBUNK/WINDHAM 1: The Red Hornets (2-1-1) and the Stags (2-1-1) settled for a tie at Troubh Arena in Portland.

Caroline Audette and Eve Martineau set up Sophia Hartley for a third-period goal for Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland tied the game and forced an extra frame, during which neither team found the back of the net but the Red Hornets outshot the Stags 3-0.

Charlotte Miller scored Cheverus/Old Orchard Beach/Kennebunk/Windham’s goal, off an assist by Olivia Bradford, in the second period.

McKenzi Horton stopped 11 shots for the Red Hornets, while Stags goalie Ella Lemieux made 18 saves, including three in overtime.

BOYS HOCKEY
EDWARD LITTLE 4, BIDDEFORD/MASSABESIC/OLD ORCHARD 0: Campbell Cassidy notched a goal and an assist and Brody Keefe assisted on a pair of goals as the Red Eddies (3-0) shut out Biddeford/Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach (0-2) in Biddeford.

Andrew Clements opened the scoring in the first period, with Trey Coulombe and Keefe providing the assists. Wesley Clements scored in the second period, with Keefe dishing out the lone assist.

Cassidy assisted on Jack Keefe’s in the first minute of the third period, then scored an unassisted goal with 13 seconds left. Gage Ducharme stopped all 22 shots he faced for the shutout.

Deryk Boles made 31 saves for Biddeford/Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach.

MEN’S BASKEBALL
BAXTER, KANE HONORED: Bates College junior Stephon Baxter and UMaine-Farmington senior Jack Kane were announced Thursday as Maine co-Players of the Week by the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.

Baxter lit up Bowdoin for 28 points on 10 of 19 shooting from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range and 4 of 5 at the free-throw line. The Bobcats, the state’s third-ranked team, beat the top-ranked Polar Bears 80-74.

Baxter is the first Bates player to be MMBCWA Player of the Week since Jeff Spellman in January 2018.

Kane averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds in two games for the Beavers last week — tallying 28 points and 10 boards in an overtime loss to Colby and 16 and 16 in a win over Maine Maritime.

Bates’ Simon McCormick and Drew Sachs and UMF’s Will Harriman were on the MMBCWA’ honor roll for their performances last week.

Bowdoin is still ranked first in the coaches poll, followed by Colby, Bates, UMF and Husson.
