We had many people call and write about their memories sparked by last week’s Mystery Photo of the barn at the former West Auburn Farm on North Auburn Road in Auburn. The 6-acre property is now owned by the Lake Auburn Watershed Neighborhood Association, where they offer free trails for walking, cross-country skiing, volleyball, cookouts and more. One entrant said it’s one of his favorite places to ride his fat bike in the winter. The facility is now known as the Lake Auburn Community Center, but one reader said many people once called it “the girls’ barn.” Our winner, Marcia Baxter, of Lewiston, who was picked in a random drawing from all the correct entries, wrote: “This is a photo of the barn of the West Auburn Farm located on the road between West and North Auburn. It was owned for years by the Thorne family and farmed by sisters Ena and Etta Thorne (and their brother John, who predeceased them). It is now owned by the Lake Auburn Watershed Neighborhood Association. My husband and I also lived on this road from 1977-1984 and remember these sisters well.” Baxter will receive a $20 Hannaford Supermarket gift card.
