A late goal to force overtime wasn’t enough for Central Maine Community College in its opening pool play game Saturday in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II men’s soccer tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Mustangs and Five Towns College Sound (Dix Hills, New York) needed penalty kicks after 90 minutes of regulation and two, 10-minute overtime sessions couldn’t decide the game.
CMCC lost 4-3 on penalty kicks.
With the teams tied 3-3 after 110 minutes of play, the Sound won the penalty kicks 4-2. Anthony Campos, Joel Funez, Sabastian Gomez and Andre Hickling scored penalties for Five Towns. Abdirahman Daud and Saub Nur scored for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs struck twice late in the first half. The first goal came from Abdibaari Hersi in the 37th minute. The assist went to Mohamed Abdikadir.
Four minutes later, Abdirahman Daud stretched Central Maine’s lead to 2-0, with Mohmed Matan picking up the assist.
Five Towns came out fast in the second half when Angel Chavez cut the deficit to 2-1.
Joel Funez scored in the 52nd minute for Five Towns to tie the game at 2-2. Chavez had the assist.
Funez scored in the 60th minute to give the Sound a 3-2 lead. James Habert had the assist.
Five Towns goalie Franklin Fuentes made three saves in the second half, but in the 85th minute, Matan scored tied the game at 3-3.
In the final minute of the second half, Mustangs’ Mohamedamin Nur fired off a shot, but Fuentes made his fourth stop of the half.
On Sunday, the Mustangs take on Penn State Beaver at 2:15 p.m. in pool play action.
