Student leaders and members of Maine’s Indigenous community at the University of Maine at Farmington lead a teach-in on Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women on Mantor Green recently. From left, Lexi Pelkey, Chy’Anne Cray, Kali Turner, Enrico Echevarria, Celia Canavan, Kurtis Morton and Scott Donahue spoke at or helped to organize the teach-in, which was a part of the university’s 2021 Indigenous Peoples’ Week. Cray, a member of the Indigenous community and UMF alumnus, said that students were encouraged to wear red to represent the murdered and missing Indigenous women because red holds spiritual significance in a lot of tribal nations.
