LEWISTON — Meghan Hird, a lifetime Mainer, is running for the Ward 6 seat on the School Committee now held by Ron Potvin.

She is the second person to announce a run for the seat.

Potvin has not announced whether he will seek another term.

Hird wrote in her announcement that her family has lived in this community for almost eight decades.

“The people of Lewiston are not just our community, but our family, which is one reason I am so passionate to make sure all our kids have the maximum opportunities we can provide,” she wrote.

“The children of our community are tomorrow’s leaders. When elected, I will advocate for them as I would advocate for my own children.”

She sees serving on the School Committee as a way to “contribute and support” the families of Ward 6, she said.

“I hope to bring a nonbiased, fact-based approach to every matter that comes before the committee,” Hird said. “While we navigate these uncertain times with the coronavirus pandemic, I will advocate for our students’ best interests, parent involvement in decision-making, and a safe work environment for all teachers and staff. I will work with my fellow committee members to lower administration cost, flow more money to the classrooms and control education costs to give property tax relief to families and the elderly.”

She said mental health and suicide prevention education are her priorities.

“We must bring appropriate resources to our high school and middle school coaching staff. Our coaches and athletic staff sometimes spend more time with our children than we do.”

She hopes to help improve outcomes and opportunities for all children, she said.
