Auburn

First day of school: Wednesday, Sept. 1, grades K-9; Thursday, Sept. 2, grades 10-12

Instruction: In-person instruction, five days a week.

Masks: Universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to schools, regardless of vaccination status, is recommended. Masks are required on school buses.

Testing: Students (parents/caregivers) and staff members must conduct self-checks for symptoms prior to boarding buses or entering school buildings each day. Those who are identified as COVID-19 positive must use home isolation/quarantine until they meet criteria for return to school. The district’s Guide to Opening Schools for the coming year does not include any reference to in-school pool testing.

More: In a letter to families, staff and students, Superintendent Cornelia Brown said that because of the unpredictable path of the pandemic, updates will be given to the Auburn School Committee every two weeks. They will include data around positive cases and the number of students and/or staff who have been placed in quarantine because they were identified as a close contact. The district’s goal is to be in school, in-person, full-time, but may adjust that plan as circumstances require.

Instruction: In-person instruction, five days a week.

Masks: Face coverings will be required indoors and on vans and buses. Superintendent Kimberly Brandt said there will be more outdoor learning and masks breaks. Schools will also attempt to keep students distanced, when possible and space allows.

Leavitt Area High School Principal Eben Shaw told directors there would be four lunch periods a day instead of the usual three to spread students out, as well as the addition of tables outside.

“We’re in a good space and ready to go and looking forward to having students here,” he said.

Testing: The district is also “strongly considering” weekly pooled testing through a statewide program, which could also lessen disruptions to the classroom from required quarantining. Parents must give permission for their child to participate in the program.

More: In a note sent to parents this week, Brandt said she hoped conditions improve enough in the coming year to result in “loosening one or more restrictions.” She said, “We have experience with remote learning should that be required for a short period of time, as when we had school closures due to outbreaks last year.”

The district is finalizing its “Plan for the safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of services,” which should be posted to the district website sometime this week at msad52.org. The superintendent said safety protocols, such as masking, will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and informed by Maine Department of Education and Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.

Testing: The district is seeking guidance regarding pool testing and will work to create a plan, if it is determined to be a way to decrease the number of students and staff who might be required to quarantine as a result of a confirmed positive case in one of the district buildings.

More: According to a letter to parents from Superintendent Todd Sanders, reporting confirmed cases and identifying close contacts, as well as those required to quarantine, will remain an expectation of the district. Any students or staff members who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate/quarantine until they satisfy the criteria for returning to school. Students or staff with a current documented medical need or an individual education plan that specifically mentions the use of shields rather than masks, will be allowed to wear face shields.

Masks: Everyone in school buildings will be required to wear masks inside when students are present until at least Oct. 1 when the requirement will be reevaluated. If staff members are not vaccinated, they will be asked to always wear masks.

Testing: Schools will use pooled testing, which will only occur with parental consent.

More: The district is “hoping with masks and pool testing we will not have large numbers quarantining,” according to Superintendent Deb Alden. Many class sizes in the buildings are smaller this year and/or classes have more teacher support, which has been covered by COVID-19 government funding. There is no mandated masking for the middle and high school, where nearly all students are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

All students will be required to wear masks on buses.

Testing: Pool testing.

More: The district is still trying to hire a nurse to keep tabs on COVID-19 issues. If it can’t find one soon, it may hire a well-organized alternative without the same medical training, officials said.

First day of school: Wednesday, Sept. 1; district will return to single bus run for all schools.

Instruction: in-school instruction, five days a week. A hybrid school calendar has been approved as a future precaution. If necessary, the model used last year would be enacted with students receiving in-person learning two consecutive days, remote learning the other two days and no new learning Friday.

Masks: All students and staff must wear masks while inside school buildings. Masks will also be required while on buses. Masks may be removed while eating and during mask breaks. In case a mask is soiled, students are encouraged to bring an extra mask. A doctor’s note is required to use a shield instead.

Students who did well in the hybrid or remote learning models last year may have the option of attending the Western Maine Education Collaborative Remote Academy. Parents must request participation and obtain school staff approval. So far, 10 of the 40 seats approved by the directors have been filled.
