Spencer Fike, 15 of Readfield, leading his pair of 5-year-old oxen that he trained himself, at a granite stone pulling demonstration at the “Old Fairgrounds” during Readfield Heritage Days this past weekend. Walking behind is his father Brandon Fike. Spencer’s great-grandfather the late Pete Gilman was known far and wide for training and competing his oxen during the Readfield Grange Fairs 1948-1964 and Spencer is carrying on that family tradition. His demonstration was held after the Readfield Historical Society had dedicated a historic sign where a half-mile trotting track was once located and where Gilman used to pull his oxen. The Society unveiled five additional historic signs the same day: three others at the Old Fairgrounds, one at the Union Meeting House and one at the Readfield Community Library. Contributed photo
