His name often comes up when talking about the annual contenders for the Oxford 250, but two weeks before the big show Cassius Clark was a surprise winner at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Clark was racing for the first time all year — and, to be exact, for the first time since last year’s 250.

Still, the driver from Farmington wheeled his King Racing car (which is based in Pictou, Nova Scotia) around Oxford Plains faster than the field during Saturday’s Pro All Stars Series Honey Badger Bar & Grill 150. It was the kind of performance fans and rivals have come to expect out of Clark, but he noted it was his first win at Oxford Plains while driving the No. 13 King Racing car.

“Felt very good. We have come so close so many times in the 13 car but were never able to pull it off,” Clark said. “A relief to make it happen, for sure.”

Clark said he always feels confident he can win when he enters a race, but since it had been nearly a year since he last motored the Super Late Model, he added, “You never know how it will turn out. Luckily everything went well and we were able to pull it off.”

Clark beat Joey Doiron — the winner of the previous PASS 150-lapper at Oxford Plains — to the finish line. Clark’s King Racing teammate Austin MacDonald, grandson of Clark’s car owner Rollie MacDonald, rounded out the podium.

“Was neat starting on the front row together (with Austin) and he did an awesome job staying up front all night and finish on the podium,” Clark said.

Clark’s has been a tough car to compete with in the 250, but he has yet to lift the trophy at the end. Saturday’s victory at least gives him some confidence in his and the car’s abilities.

“I feel really good with how the car runs during the entire run,” Clark said, adding that he’s really looking forward to the 48th running of the Oxford 250 on Aug. 29.

Two other divisions were in action at Oxford Plains on Saturday, including the PASS Mods racers. Garrett Lamb of Windham led wire to wire in the 50-lap feature, beating out Max Cookson. Brandon Varney placed third.

In a $500-to-win feature for Street Stocks, Kurt Hewins came away with the checkered flag and the winner’s check. Richard Thompson was the runner-up and Dan Brown rounded out the podium.

FRIDAY NIGHT FAST

Since the PASS series taking over Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday night, the track hosted its full Oxford Acceleration Series on Friday, along with some of the Oxford Championship Series divisions.

In Championship Series action, the Bandits feature was once again won by a Mowatt brother. Luke Mowatt won his seventh feature of the season. His brother, Alex, has claimed five victories out of the 16 features the series has held this year. Alex finished third Friday night, while Jeff Libby (two wins this season) earned runner-up honors.

Samuel Wardwell won his second Rookies feature of the season, beating out division points-leader Maddy Herrick. Dale Lawrence won the Figure-8s feature, with Greg Durgin and Eric Hodgkins rounding out the podium.

Acceleration Series winners include Trevor Ward (Runnin’ Rebels), Brad Weismann (Sport Trucks), Ladies (Breeanna Spaulding), Dominik Knowlton (Cruisers), Cam Childs (Outlaws) and Scott Merrill (4-Cylinder Figure-8s).

GSPSS AT BRMS

The New Hampshire-based Granite State Pro Stock Series visited Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Saturday, and Corey Bubar picked up his first career victory in the series by leading all 120 laps of the feature.

The Windham driver led all 60 laps before a scheduled break, then came out of pit lane first and never surrendered the lead from there, holding off runner-up Rusty Poland. Series points-leader Gabe Brown was third.

Other winners Saturday from Beech Ridge’s regular divisions include Danny Wear (Sport Series), Wade Kennedy (Wildcat), Butch Keene (Beetle Bug), Derrick Drown (Mighty Trucks), Paul Lund (Mad Bomber Varsity) and Brandon Williams (Mad Bomber JV).

WISCASSET WINNERS

It was Group 1’s turn at Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday, along with the Roadrunners division. Kevin Douglass (Pro Stocks) and Mark Lucas (Super Streets) both won 40-lap features, while Andy Kaherl (4-Cylinder Pro) and Jeff Farrington (Thunder 4 Mini) each won 25-lap features in their respective divisions.

Seth Woodard won the 20-lap Roadrunners feature.
