Instead of spending the first two weeks of summer vacation having fun with their friends and family, 19 high school students from across the northeast gathered at Bates College to learn about modern history. They studied the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, Watergate and important Supreme Court decisions, during their two-week in the Summer Scholars Program at Bates, but perhaps most importantly, the students got a taste of what it is like to be in college. They were required to write a paper using primary sources at the Muskie Archives. They even stayed in the dorms at the school. “I really learned history,” said 16 year old Andrea LeClair, one of two Lewiston High School students who participated in the program. And because it’s at Bates College, it’s a lot like a college course,” LeClair said. Even better, all the students were excited about being there. They participated wholeheartedly in discussions.
