Rhonda Rackliffe of Minot takes a picture of her uncle’s name on the 33rd and newest memorial stone dedicated at Lewiston’s Veterans Memorial Park during the Fourth of July ceremony Sunday morning. Despite the rainy weather, about 100 people attended the dedication to see the new granite marker’s 216 names and the rest of the growing park, which is overseen by the L&A Veterans Council. Rackliffe said her mother, Betty Stone, asked that Stone’s brother’s name be included on the new memorial. Rackliffe’s uncle, Donald K. Keene Sr., who lived in West Poland, was a member of Merrill’s Marauders, a U.S. Army special operations jungle warfare unit working in Southeast Asia during World War II. A new monument honoring veterans of the Vietnam War will be dedicated on Veterans Day in November. Mark Mogensen/Sun Journal
