SOMERVILLE — Police are investigating the death of a man, following an altercation Wednesday.

A man was discovered deceased Wednesday outside a residence at 1041 Rockland Road (state Route 17) in Somerville, following an altercation that was reported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department around 10:15 a.m., according to police at the scene.

Shannon Moss, Maine State Police spokesperson, said an altercation that occurred between 9:30 and 10 a.m. left one man dead and another man at a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

A witness, who declined to speak on the record, said the deceased man lived at the residence. He said the now-deceased resident and another man were having words outside the residence and the man who lived there stabbed the other. Then the man who had been stabbed then shot the resident.

The man with wounds, apparently from the reported altercation, was transported by ambulance from Valley Road in Jefferson, according to police at the scene. Valley Road is off Rockland Road.

Moss said the names of the two men aren’t being released, pending notification of their families.

Moss said the deceased will be taken to the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy is expected to be performed Friday.

“The investigation is in its early stages,” she said in an email Wednesday. “The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and Evidence Response Team will be investigating the crime scene and conducting interviews well into the night trying to piece together exactly what happened this morning.”

Route 17 was closed to traffic in one lane Wednesday morning.

At about 10:42 a.m., a state police trooper reported he was with a truck, that had a weapon and a dog inside, on Valley Road, according to communications heard on an emergency scanner.

State police and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case, authorities said. Lincoln County Chief Deputy Rand Maker said state police were the primary investigating agency and referred all questions to them.

The distance between the men’s locations was approximately 2 miles.
