When Dennis Grasso of Livermore was about 12 years old, he found a set of old golf clubs down in the cellar of his family’s New York home and sneaked out onto a nearby golf course to play. He and his friends would go out at night, and stay until they got chased off. Golf courses were private clubs then, and sneaking onto the East Chester course was the only way to get in. Grasso doesn’t have to do that anymore — now he owns his own nine-hole course. In between, there has been 41 years of golfing, starting with caddying at the course he used to get chased off, and ending up as a golf pro, owner, and manager at his own club. Last February, Grasso and Jane Smith bought the Maple Lane Golf Club in Livermore, converted part of the old farmhouse to a restaurant, and moved upstairs. Smith is a native Mainer, and Grasso finds himself happier, for the summer months.
