A Ride On The Red Mare’s Back
By Ursula Le Guin
Every winter I read this book. It draws from Scandinavian folklore, set in the snowy woods with trolls and a magical carved horse. It calls to me because my ancestors were Norwegian.
Like the main character, I grew up in a quiet house, I understand her fierce determination to save her brother, to do what has to be done, on her own. But she is helped by the gift her father made for her, and led back by a silver thread sent by her mother.
There is a strong sense of family that empowers the girl. We all face uncertainty these days, it would be reassuring to read of her quest.
