The Monmouth cheerleading team is a state champion again.
The results of this year’s unprecedented virtual cheer results were announced Saturday. The Mustangs earned the Class C state title with a total score of 50.7. The state title is Monmouth’s ninth, and first since it won eight (seven Class D and one Class C) in nine years between 1994 and 2002.
The other 2021 cheer state champions are Bangor (Class A), Hermon (Class B) and Penobscot Valley (Class D).
Teams were required to submit video of their routines by March 18. The routines were evaluated by three judges, whose scores were tallied to reach the total score.
Monmouth, the Mountain Valley Conference champ, overcame last year’s state champion, Sumner (48.9) for the Class C title. Calais (47.6) placed third, Central (43.5) fourth and Houlton (42) fifth.
Lisbon — the 2015, 2017 and 2019 champion — scored 40.5 and finished eighth this year. The Greyhounds’ virtual routine received the highest score given to a Class C team, but another judge scored it in the bottom five. Mountain Valley (33.3) placed 11th, Dirigo (25.5) took 16th, Oak Hill was (24.7) 17th and Spruce Mountain (24) 19th.
Bangor edged two-time defending champion Biddeford by a half-point, 65 to 64.5, to claim its second state title (the Rams’ first was in 2018). Scarborough (63.5) was third. Lewiston finished fourth with a score of 62.45, and Oxford Hills was fifth at 61.9.
In Classes B and D, one dynasty was extended while another was put on hold.
Hermon claimed its fifth consecutive Class B title, earning a score of 64.4. Medomak Valley (61.2) was second, Freeport (56.8) took third, while Leavitt (54.75) placed fourth and Morse (53.9) rounded out the top five. Mt. Blue earned a score of 42 and took 11th, while Gray-New Gloucester, the Western Maine Conference runner-up earlier this month, placed 12th with a 41, and Poland (31.5) was 17th.
Penobscot Valley ended Central Aroostook’s seven-year reign over Class D. The Howlers earned their first state title by defeating the Panthers by nine-tenths of a point, 50.2 to 49.3. Central Aroostook has won 12 of the past 14 Class D championships.
Bangor Christian (38.3) took third in Class D, Southern Aroostook (32.7) fourth and Schenck (30.9) fifth. Buckfield just missed a top-five finish, coming in sixth with a score of 30.6, only three-tenths of a point behind Schenck.
