The University of Maine at Orono’s chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, has accepted its first female member: Kathleen Kirk, a junior from Mechanic Falls. Displaying the “cool” of the lab scientist, Kathy is casual about her honor and her life in a man’s world. Tau Beta Pi confers membership only on undergraduates in engineering who are distinguished scholars and have exemplary character. A junior must be in the upper eighth of his or her class. Kathy has been science-oriented from early school days. She spent one summer of her high school years at Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor and there she became genuinely interested in research. Knowledge that research of this type is pretty much male dominated is just another fact to Kathy. She has three brothers and is used to being outnumbered. There may be minor problems when she goes into the commercial world, but that is a ways off. She will do an undergraduate thesis this year on the synthesis of branchain sugars and a doctorate is in her overall plans.

Joseph W. Pappalardo of Raymond, the president and volunteer coordinator of Camp Sunshine in Casco, was honored as a Jefferson Award winner at a ceremony Friday night at the Portland Museum of Art. The Jefferson Award recognizes distinguished volunteer service to the community. Winners are selected by a panel of judges which includes prominent Maine residents of various occupations and interests. Five people from southern Maine were honored at the event. The Jefferson Award is determined on the basis of an assessment of the individual’s impact on the community, length or depth of service, and personal investment of time and energy. 6 Alive! has sponsored the award for the southern section of the State since 1978.
