100 Years Ago: 1921
Miss de Angelis, one of the Northeastern field secretaries in the Foreign Born department is at the Y.W.C.A. this week. She has been holding conferences this week with the different departments and Wednesday held an important one with the committees on immigration here.
50 Years Ago: 1971
Larry Gowell, former Edward Little High School sports star, has signed his 1971 contract as a member of the New York Yankees organization, and has started spring training with other members of the team at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Last season, Gowell played AA ball as a member of Manchester, NH., Yankees team and has been assured that for the 1972 season he will be with that club, or be moved up to AAA ball to Syracuse, N.Y., Yankees. Should he be assigned to Syracuse, it will be with a bonus contract. Gowell, who married Glenys Hall of Lisbon Falls on Valentine’s Day, was accompanied by his bride when he reported in at Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 19.
25 Years Ago: 1996
Lewiston YWCA Evergreen Seniors Club will meet Friday from noon to 1 pm. at the YWCA where Walter F. Sargent of Auburn will tell folk-type poetic stories from his book, “Homespun.” He is a member of the Poetry Society of Maine and has had two books published: “The Common Cup” and “Homespun.” Seniors should bring a bag lunch; dessert and coffee will be provided by the YWCA. All senior men and women are welcome to attend.
